The feeling of being lost brings the opportunity to discover something new, find a new path, only if taken as an opportunity.

We all feel lost at some point,  at some crossroads of life. In the fog of not knowing what to do, what comes next, or what our choices will bring. And that’s not a flaw — that’s being human.

As teenagers, feeling lost was almost expected. We explored ideas, weighed our instincts, sat with uncertainty, and called it growing up. But somewhere along the way, adulthood redrew the rules. Suddenly, we expect ourselves to have all the answers — to our pain, our conflicts, our decisions, practically everything. We stop exploring. We rely strictly on past experiences and operate only from what we already know. We close the door to discovering anything new about ourselves.

What follows is stagnation. Days start to feel heavy, overwhelming, and exhausting.

But here’s what’s worth remembering: feeling lost is only defeating if you treat it as a dead end.

Positive psychology research shows that curiosity — the willingness to stay open and explore — is one of the strongest predictors of life satisfaction and mental resilience. The moment you ask “What next?” shift happens.

So the next time you feel lost, try this:

  1. Ask ONE question: What can I do right now? Just one thing.
  2. Look in the mirror and smile. It sounds simple because it is.
  3. Pick ONE affirmation that resonates and keep returning to it.

In NLP, this is called chunking down — moving your focus from the overwhelming whole to the one specific thing in front of you. It breaks the chaos, quiets the noise, and brings you back to the present. The mirror and smile activity interrupts the emotional spiral and signals safety to your nervous system. The affirmation works towards cognitive restructuring, consciously replacing a draining thought with one that opens possibility rather than closes it.

Feeling lost is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It’s an invitation to find a path you haven’t walked yet.

Everyone can use a little help, coaching, guidance, or mentoring to be happy, flourish and not get torn between conflicts, doubts, or emotional roller-coasters.
